The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston, a Chinese American writer, has been a subject of controversy since its pub-lication. The argument mainly focuses on the genre of the wring and the employment of Chinese cultures in the work. Whether it’s a novel or an autobiography, and whether Chinese cultures are deliberately misread or accidently misunderstood, no unanimous conclu-sion can be drawn. Therefore, from the perspectives of the genre and the cultural misreading in The Woman Warrior, the paper tends to study the unique writing style of mixing authenticity and invention with which Maxine Hong Kingston intends to reveal the hardship ex-perienced when the American minorities and the Chinese women want to seek self-identity and self-development.

Maxine Hong Kingston’s novel The Woman Warrior is one of representations of Chinese American literature. It re-flects Chinese American, especially the female struggle for self identity in American society. In the work, there are five females starting to break silence, have their own voice and subvert the male discourse center under the oppression and control of patriar-chy. This paper will reconstruct the complex image of“woman warrior”based on Foucault’s discourse theory and probe how the female construct the power of discourse in a society of multiple conflicts, and how they fail and linger at the around the pro-cess from voice loss to articulation.
