Based on the Defamiliarization Theory put forward by Russian Formalism, this paper suggests that this trend deviates from the traditional norms of subtitle translation and entertains the target audience by making use of the defamiliarizing effect brought about by Internet catchwords and the striking contrast between the Eastern and Western culture. This paper holds that the abuse of defamiliarizing methods has weakened the effect to the degree that the target audience begin to be tired of entertainment-oriented rewriting in English movie subtitle translation.
