The Politeness Principle and appropriateness guarantee the success of linguistic communication. Combining the Polite-ness Principle by Leech with the appropriateness in language use, the writer made an analysis of many specific pragmatic fail-ures in English-Chinese communication through a comparison of both languages. He proposes that polite words should be used appropriately in communication. Thus, the Politeness Principle gets a supplement and improvement and successful communica-tions are ensured.
